Hi there Children of Faena!
in this developer news entry, we will proudly present you a gameplay showcase for Azura – The Two Views of a World!
Every quest has a beginning
Every quest will have a short introduction. In this case, Josh is searching for some letters, which his father is hiding from him. Josh believes that those must be the letters from his mother, who left the family, when he was younger. It might be his chance to find out more. Together with Azura he’s planning how to sneak into Reimund’s rooms. How you as the player achieve Josh’s goal, it up to you!
In your journal you can read a short summary of what you will have to do during the quest and which steps you already have gone through. We want to achieve that you are able to memorize what you have done, other than just present one-liners to you.
You chose your own path
Most of the quests allow you to approach the situation in different ways. Here, for example, you can now decide either to speak to Azura, so she makes a distraction by burning the cart or you can speak to Josh’s father to tell him someone would need his help in town. Either way, they will have time to sneak into the private rooms of Reimund and search for the key that opens the drawer full of letters from Josh’s mother.
Multiple dialogue options
When speaking to a character you will have multiple dialogue options. You can try by yourself, what you think will be the best result. Sometimes, you will have to choose wisely, as only one option can decide on success or failure. If one approach won’t work, there will always be another, so keep your eyes open for opportunities!
The Two Views
One of our core mechanics is “the two views” our characters have on the world they are living in. When searching for the key that opens the locked drawer in this gameplay scene, Azura has not yet fully grasped the concept of what she is looking for. Therefore when you are controlling her, you will find a lot of items in the world that look like a key to her, but are something different in reality. You might be lucky to stumble upon items that are close to each other, like lockpicks for example. Josh could also use those to open the drawer eventually.
Different actions have different consequences
Whatever path you choose, keep in mind that every action will have consequences! If you chose to lie to your father, he will eventually find out and if you decided to burn the cart for a little distraction he could have been hurt easily. In this example both outcomes have a negative connotation. You will have to decide by yourself which path is more acceptable to you, as there are rarely situations that are either black or white.
