Hi there Children of Faena!
In this developer news entry, we will tell you a bit more about the fast travelling game mechanics.

Travel as you like

The Kingdom of Faena is a vast one. Getting from A to B can be quite a journey, as the distance between spots can be large, travelling the roads can be very cumbersome, and some of the regions can be quite dangerous. The landmass of the Kingdom has a size of 256km², so it would take about 3 hours to cross the map, while on foot. That’s why you might keep an eye out for different opportunities in order to move along – there is at least a great variety that you can choose from.

Travelling with others

When it comes to roaming the roads and paths by land, you will have multiple options that change as you play. In the early story, Josh and Azura won’t have much of a choice, but to travel either on foot, or in a rather tricky way. Josh can ask for a ride in the carts of passing by merchants and has to perform a little distraction in order for Azura to hop into the rear. If his distraction fails though, they will have to wait for the next cart and try their luck again.

You will be able to travel vast distances without getting too tired this way, but it will come with other more dangerous challenges. Depending on the time of the day, and which regions the merchants are trying to cross, they can get into a holdups, set up by bandits and other shady characters. If such a situation occurs, both of our protagonists can choose either to help in a fight or flee the scene.

Travelling by land and air

As the story continues, Josh can ride carts by himself, taking Azura with him. When Azura gets older, she will be able to fly by herself. She will be able to take Josh with her, but she won’t be strong enough to take him across large distances. When she grows stronger though, this won’t be an issue anymore. While Azura is flying, Josh can choose to take a horse instead to get along fast.

Quick travel posts in your encampments

When you have built several encampments across the map, you won’t just have a place you can call home, but you will have the possibility to travel between them. This way you will have a very fast option to travel large distances without fearing to get into any dangers or other problems.

Hi there Children of Faena!
In this developer news entry, we will tell you a bit more about for which operating systems we plan to release the game for.

What’s the release plan?

We’re planning to release the game for Windows, Linux and Apple iOS.
And there is not much else left to say at this point. Windows will be our preferred platform and this will also be the first release. We’re big Linux fans, so we definitely want to publish for this platform, too. Also, Apple users mostly don’t get their money’s worth when it comes to games. We don’t want to exclude any of the operating systems here, as it wouldn’t make sense to us doing so. Linux and iOS versions of the game will be released shortly after Windows launch.

What about consoles?

At this point we want to focus on PC. This, however, is no statement we will not address consoles at all! We’re planning to work with a publisher at this point, so when the time comes and the market is ready for a console version of Azura, it will happen. Technically it is not a big deal, as we’re using the Unity Engine. This way we can build the game for consoles as well. A major thing will be adjusting the controls and of course the distribution of the console version.
So, have a little patience on this one 😉

Hi there Children of Faena!
In this developer news entry, we will tell you a bit more about what why we are focusing on creating more showcases and try to find a publisher!

Creating more showcases

Currently we are working on more gameplay showcases of our mechanics. We will address several gameplay features and polish them to finally present them to you!
Of course we have a motive, why we want to do this: As Kickstarter is now over, and we are quite tenacious to get further with the game, we try to find different financing possibilities. One of them is working with indie-friendly publishers.

On the quest, searching for a publisher

Once we have a nice little preset of showcases, we’re going to throw them a few indie friendly publishers – 51 in terms of numbers. This is also what the showcases are meant for. At this point we don’t plan to release them as a playable demo to the public, as there will be a lot of scripted scenes and it will generally not represent the final version of the game. But why the effort though, you might ask yourself.

99% of the publishers are requesting at least a playable demo or gameplay showcases before they decide to work with the developers. It doesn’t have to be a fully polished version of the game but rather has to show, what we can achieve as developers.

Of course we don’t want to exclude you from seeing the showcases, which is why we are going to present them to you, once they’re up and running. We really value your feedback on things like this!

Hi there Children of Faena!
In this developer news entry, we will tell you a bit more about what combat and fighting is going to be.

Fighting with Josh

To be honest, Josh isn’t much of a fighter. As the youngest son of a blacksmith, he doesn’t have the time to practice with his own sword very often. There are a lot of other obligations, he has to take care of, like sweeping the forge, cutting wood, or hammering nails until they’re even again. The day he meets Azura though, changes his life. He’s not the little boy anymore and has to accomplish tasks, which are even more difficult than he first thought they would be.

You, as the player will decide how Josh will develop. Starting with the sword, he forged by himself, you will begin your long journey mastering such weapons. Or you can choose a different way. There will be multiple weapons in the game, like bludgeons, daggers, knives, axes, but also bows for ranged combat. Depending on what you choose, you will gain according experience. If you don’t train to fight with your fists, you will be brought down to earth very quickly if you don’t have another weapon at hand…

Fighting with Azura

Azura will learn different fighting techniques over time. Starting with her base attacks, she will be able to use her claws, bite and swing her tail to ground her enemies. As the story develops, you will see that there will be more, she can master, like different types of dragon breaths. Azura is a wind dragon, so the very fist attack she will learn, will be an ice breath, and how she uses her wings to hold enemies at distance.

How she will acquire other types of dragon breaths, and what else she will be capable of, will remain a secret for now…

Learn more skills as you go

The more you play, the better the protagonists will get at certain skills. As you roam the world, you will meet certain characters, who are willing to share their knowledge with you. Use it wisely and you will achieve real power!

Hi there Children of Faena!
This time we’re here with some rather sad news. The Kickstarter campaign is over and we didn’t make it to reach the initial funding goal.

But you can read here, why this won’t be the end at all!

Thanks to all our backers and supporters out there!

You did an awesome job! Not only did you back us financially, but you were the ones, who really believed in the idea behind the game. There goes a big shout out to Küchenliebelei, who didn’t only back us, but also baked Azura Brownies, which was absolutely fantastic! A huge thank goes to LetsGameDev, whom we “only” asked for personal feedback and who supported us directly on Twitter and YouTube (with interesting vocals… :D). Also a big thank you to PixelCritics, who featured us in his blog and the German games magazine Gamesmarkt, who interviewed us on how it is to work as a game developer in Germany.

We also got a lot of support from the game and developer community of Unity, who gave us a couple of great ideas that they shared with us. And of course we want to thank our community who had our back on our social media channels and on Discord. You were all awesome, guys!

We won’t forget your trust in this Kickstarter campaign!

What we’ve learned from Kickstarter

To get straight to the point: Kickstarter was not even that bad! And no, we’ve not gone crazy at this point…
We gathered some awesome statistics during the campaign, which tell us that about 14% of the people who spent more than 10 seconds on the Kickstarter page, backed us in the end. And holy cow, that’s awesome! So what did go wrong?

We’ve lacked to reach people and spread the word far enough during the campaign. Although we’ve tried our very best and had no support from any marketing company at all, it wasn’t enough. We’re no marketing specialists, and having no experience in this field was, what made the campaign fail in the end. But there is one thing we can do to keep things going…

What we’ve also learned

When there is one thing, we’ve learned, it is that we should outsource the marketing strategies and leave them to professionals who know what they’re doing. Don’t get us wrong here, we had a company, who was willing to support us until the very beginning of the campaign and then said: “Nope, we’re gone.” – which was another lesson learned by the way.

We also pushed the project further quite a lot during the campaign in a relatively short amount of time, which is why stopping here, would be more than just wrong. We’ve gathered some very precious knowledge about game design and what we can achieve with Unity; boy this engine keeps getting better and better…

What’s the future of Azura?

We don’t even think of stopping here. Currently we’re working on a playable demo, which we will present to quite every indie-friendly publisher, we’ve found on the internet so far. We’ve worked on a game pitch, which you can imagine as some kind of presentation we’re giving in front of investors and publishers. At this point we’re quite convinced that we will find a publishing partner, who can give us the support we need to bring Azura – The Two Views of a World back into the race!

Hi there Children of Faena!
in this developer news entry, we will tell you a bit more about what swimming in the various lakes, rivers, and of course the ocean is going to be.

Swimming in Faena

When roaming the Kingdom of Faena, you will not only travel on land. There are several rivers and lakes, that await your exploration, too! Many mysteries of the Kingdom are not only to be found in dark dungeons, old buildings or dense forests, but also underwater or at places, you will need to swim to.

Flow direction of rivers and waves

To keep things exciting, we are already have the flow direction of water in rivers and streams up and running. What’s left here will be the influence on objects that are in the water, so they will keep drifting away. Another things is what’s called the tessellation of water surfaces. When this is implemented, the surface of water will actually have physics, like waves and water dispersion while swimming.

Underwater environment

But all of this won’t be enough! We plan to add water environments that you can explore, as well as a flourishing underwater flora and fauna. This can be various fishes, crabs, turtles, but also whales and other sea dwellers. In addition to that there will be underwater wrecks of old ships, as well as other mysterious places you will be able to explore.

in this developer news entry, we will tell you a bit more about the day and night cycles in the Kingdom of Faena.

Bright days and dark nights

As you wander through the beautiful Kingdom of Faena, you will come through diverse regions and different landscapes. While roaming the lands, the atmospheres of the light will play a major role. Light will behave differently, depending on where you are, what weather currently appears and of course it will be influenced by the time of the day. If you are in a forest for example an the sun just rose, you will see rays shining through the foliage.

day night cycle

A day & night cycle in the Kingdom of Faena

By nightfall however, you will have to rely on moonlight, if you want to roam further. Depending on the phase of the moon and how cloudy or foggy it is, you either see more or less. Although Azura is capable of seeing quite well during the night, Josh will need an additional source of light, to be able to see anything.

New talking animations for human characters

As you might have seen our previous gameplay-showcase, you may also have noticed that when Josh was talking to his father, there were no animations that indicated an ongoing conversation. This had to change of course and since we’re two diligent guys, we rummaged in our box full of animations to eventually find the right one.

And here we go! We added some smooth animations for the talking.
There are now four different talking animations that you can see, while being in a conversation with another character. A conversation however is of course more than just waving around with the arms while talking, which is why we are also adding nodding and shaking the head, shrugging shoulders and much more in the future.

For now, enjoy what we’ve created so far! As for now we’re presenting some pictures to you, because we’re working on something big. More on that next time 🙂

Hi there Children of Faena!
in this developer news entry, we want to show you a bit more of how Azura and Josh grow older as you play!

A different kind of start

Remember those games where the protagonist awakes somewhere at a shore, having a complete blackout, seeking meaning in existence? Or you’re not knowing who you are, finding yourself on a cart to meet your executioner? Sounds familiar? We’re fed of it. Why not try something new?

When we started developing the story around Azura – The Two Views of a World, we were of course thinking about how we wanted to introduce the world to our players. And what is a better introduction to a world you don’t know and don’t understand than actually being born? It made a lot of sense to us, as the player starts off with Azura and literally hatches from a dragon egg!

From there on you can explore the world, learn how to move around and get in touch with the fear mechanics for the first time. Of course you would not want to stay a dragon baby the whole time, so we thought of how cool it would be to actually see the characters grow as you play!

Grow with the characters

When Azura is crossing paths with Josh, he will already be in his early childhood. You will meet Reimund, his father and Josh’s older brother. Josh is a big support for his father in the forge as he is helping with daily tasks. When he meets Azura however, he starts to see the world he has been living in until now differently. As the story continues, they both get to learn a lot from each other and of course from all of the characters they are about to meet on their mutual journey.

With growing older also come new skills and abilities. Josh will grow stronger and will get better in handling different kinds of weapons – depending on what you choose for him. He will also grow stronger and will be able to face opponents he wouldn’t have had a chance to stand against, compared to when he was younger.

Azura will be able to carry Josh on her back, as she grows older. They will get the chance to travel to parts of the Kingdom they were unable to go before, like the Sky Islands of Faena.

There will be a lot to discover on their adventures!

Hi there Children of Faena!
in this developer news entry, we want to tell you a bit more about what we will do to optimize the game performance!

Splitting the terrain

Faena will be a huge terrain, stretching over 16km². In order to load such a massive map, we plan to split the terrain into smaller sized chunks, which are loaded as you leave one chunk and enter another. This will allow us to “enable” and “disable” parts of the map, in which you are currently not playing actively, resulting in a massive relief for your graphics card.

Occlusion Culling

Very wide spread among video games is a technique which is called occlusion culling. To explain it shorty: Only objects which are seen by the player are also rendered. Objects that the player doesn’t see, are also not shown, which results in a massive performance boost.

Level of Details

Having multiple levels of object details is also quite common to save that precious performance. When you are far away from an object it won’t make sense to render it in full quality, as you can’t fully see it anyway. This is why we downgrade the level of detail of objects which are far away and load more details, when you approach the object.

But we take this even further. Sometimes it just does’t make sense to load an object at all, even if the camera of the player points at it directly. Imagine you are standing on a mountain and you are able to see your home from up there. You know that from this angle you would be able to see your garden, where a small table is placed that has a flower pot on it. You neither can see the table, nor the flower pot, because the distance is simply too long. In this case, we simply would let the table and the flower pot disappear, because you wouldn’t be able to see it anyway. Only if you came closer and would be able to see those objects, we’re enabling them again.

Shader optimization

As we’re using third party assets, they come with pre-worked shaders. Those have to be optimized mainly in quality, because we don’t want to present only the standard shaders to you. Tools like Shader Graph for Unity will help us to create multiple high quality shaders that will not only look good, but also stay optimized!

Mesh & light baking

Another trick, how to keep the performance high is to bake meshes and lights. We’re not literally putting something in a stove here, but what we do is telling the Unity Engine to precompute all possible paths e.g. static lights will have. This way your computer won’t have to calculate lights when you play the game, but just loads the data that was calculated by us earlier.
